Intern - Counselling

Welcome! My name is Leah and I was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. I come from two cultures with my father’s side being Punjabi-Canadian and my mother’s side being German-Canadian. Coming from a bi-cultural background, I have great respect and appreciation for diversity and I take a culturally sensitive approach to counselling. I am a parent of a teen and have extensive experience working with children and families for over ten years as a registered early childhood educator. I have a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology degree from Yorkville University and I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Trinity Western University.

I am a registered clinical counsellor (RCC) with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC) and I use an inclusive, trauma-informed, and strengths-based approach to working with clients. I draw on interventions from Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. My approach is warm, caring, and compassionate. I provide a safe, non-judgmental, and nurturing space for clients to share their experiences and their struggles. My goal is to collaborate with clients to empower them in their goals and honor them on their paths towards greater self-awareness, insight, healing, and personal growth. I support clients who are struggling with anxiety, depression, anger, emotional dysregulation, codependency, relationships, parenting, trauma, abuse, grief and loss, career exploration, and existential issues.

Hi! My name is Gerardo. I have been a visitor on lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) and W̱SÁNEĆ (Saanich) lands on Coast Salish territory (Greater Victoria, Vancouver Island) for the past 16 years, starting with my undergraduate studies in psychology, followed by a Master’s degree in Indigenous Communities Counselling Psychology.

My clinical studies included a practicum with Aboriginal Child and Youth Mental Health (MCFD). After graduating, I worked at a youth residential addictions recovery program, and currently, I am a child and youth mental health therapist at Hulitan (huh-lee-tan), serving urban and on-reserve Indigenous families.

I am able to provide treatment for addictions, anxiety, depression, trauma stemming from abuse, PTSD, chronic pain, grief and loss. I also work with other less “heavy mental health” areas of self-esteem, personal growth and goals, and nutrition support. I am also available to help folks process situations that involved racism or discrimination. I have training in sand play therapy, EMDR, narrative therapy, DBT, and ACT.

I have been working in the field of community mental health for over over 7 years, supporting individuals struggling with anxiety, mood disorders, addiction, grief, major life transitions, and complex trauma. I have a strengths-based focus with roots in the person-centred approach, cognitive behavioural therapy, and mindfulness. I am now delving into the Internal Family Systems model and attachment-oriented practices.

I serve adult individuals and couples, however and in whatever structure they may present. I believe in the healing, transformative power of the therapeutic relationship and I strive to support my clients with due collaboration and respect.

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Calgary and a MA in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University.

I spend my time with my son, my husband, and our dog; reading; learning; and enjoying the view.
